Iraq to Impose a Two-Day Curfew for the First Census in Decades.
Iraq has postponed the census several times in the last three decades due to the security situation in the country. The country's first census in 27 years will be conducted over two days in November, according to officials. A two-day curfew will be imposed on November 20th and 21st to conduct the population census, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani announced in a statement on Sunday. Local media reports have said that various measures have been approved for this process, including coordination with the KRG for the training of statistical personnel. In addition, multiple ministries will provide support for training staff by providing classrooms and youth centers. Ravaged by decades of conflict, Iraq postponed a census multiple times, most recently in 2010 due to tensions over disputed territories.
The last general census was held in 1997 in 15 Iraqi provinces - excluding the three northern provinces that make up the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
