Former Chilean President and prominent human rights advocate Michelle Bachelet will be honored with the 2024 Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development, according to a statement released on Friday (December 6) by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. The international jury, led by India’s former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, recognized Bachelet’s impactful contributions to human rights, peace, and equality.
The award highlights her service as the first Executive Director of UN Women, her tenure as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and her two terms as President of Chile. In addition, the trust acknowledged her efforts in strengthening India-Chile relations.
