This weekend, the Colombian diaspora in Madrid is celebrating Día de las Velitas (Day of the Candles), one of the most beloved holidays marking the beginning of the Christmas season. More than a dozen Latino-owned businesses opened their doors to join the community in observing this colorful tradition.
On this festive day, families light candles at their doorsteps, decorate them with lanterns, set off fireworks, and share classic Colombian treats such as buñuelos. “It’s a magical day, filled with hope and togetherness,” says Alejandra Triana, who continues to honor her homeland’s customs despite living abroad.
Festival of Lights in Colombia
From December 7 to 9, the town of Villa de Leyva in the Boyacá region hosts its 26th Festival of Lights, commemorating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. During the Noche de las Velitas (Night of the Candles) on December 7, the region’s top pyrotechnicians compete in a dazzling fireworks show. Streets, balconies, and terraces light up with candles and lanterns, illuminating the colonial architecture with a festive glow.
