India and Brazil Reinforce Climate Cooperation Ahead of UN Climate Conference 2025
Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman met with André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, President of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP), for a strategic dialogue on climate finance and sustainable development. The meeting, held in New Delhi, focused on aligning development goals with effective climate action.
Sitharaman commended Brazil for its leadership role in the G20 India MDB Roadmap, an initiative aimed at reforming and strengthening Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to make them more responsive to the needs of developing countries. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that energy transitions remain affordable and accessible for countries in the Global South.
The discussion revolved around the need to strike a critical balance between developmental priorities and environmental responsibilities. Both parties agreed that while global cooperation is key, each country must be allowed the flexibility to determine its own path to sustainability based on its unique economic and social context.
The meeting builds upon the India-Brazil joint statement from September 2023, in which both nations reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing strategic ties and jointly addressing global challenges. India and Brazil continue to collaborate closely in multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the G20, and now the upcoming UN Climate Summit.
Minister Sitharaman was joined in the meeting by Naveen Patnaik, an eminent voice on climate action and sustainable development, underscoring India’s high-level commitment to leading on global climate issues as it prepares for a greater role in shaping international environmental policy.
