India–Chile Workshop Addresses Emerging Challenges of Drug Trafficking
On 8 April 2026, Ambassador Abhilasha Joshi participated in the inaugural ceremony of the Chile–India Workshop on “Micro-trafficking of Drugs: The Emerging Challenges” in Santiago, organized in collaboration with Chile’s Policía de Investigaciones de Chile. The gathering was welcomed by General Prefect Ricardo Gatica, with India represented by Shri Anees Cherkunnath, Deputy Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau.

In her remarks, the Ambassador highlighted the increasingly transnational and complex nature of drug trafficking, noting its close links with organized criminal networks. She emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation and coordinated responses to effectively address these evolving challenges.

Underscoring India’s balanced approach, she outlined efforts combining enforcement, prevention, capacity building, and global partnerships. Referring to the growing India–Chile partnership, she highlighted expanding collaboration between enforcement agencies and the importance of knowledge-sharing initiatives, including ITEC programmes, as well as ongoing efforts toward a bilateral MoU on drug-related cooperation.

The workshop reflects the shared commitment of India and Chile to deepen cooperation and strengthen joint efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and organized crime.
