India Continues to Extend a Helping Hand to Colombia with a Second Shipment of Humanitarian Aid

Nearly three weeks have passed since the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, leaving more than 300 people dead and thousands injured. In the midst of the tragedy, numerous expressions of support have been extended to the victims and those affected by both Colombians and the international community.

Countries such as the United States, Spain, Italy, among others, provided substantial financial contributions for the assistance and protection of those affected, as well as for the assessment of material damage. In addition, countries such as Ecuador and Israel provided technical and specialized teams.

Furthermore, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, and Chile sent tens of thousands of tons of food, hygiene supplies, medicines, and medical supplies. India is also among the countries that have shown solidarity with Colombia, announcing this week its second shipment of humanitarian aid following the devastating earthquake, described as the most powerful earthquake recorded in Colombia in a century.

Through its official channels, the Embassy of India in Colombia stated that the assistance provided reaffirms India’s solidarity with the people and Government of Colombia, as well as its commitment to continuing to support the country during these difficult times. “The second batch of humanitarian assistance sent by the Government of India has arrived in Colombia to contribute to relief and recovery efforts following the earthquake of August 10,” the Embassy stated in a post on social media.

It is worth noting that on August 14, India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, announced the dispatch of the first shipment of 20 metric tons of humanitarian relief supplies to Colombia as part of India’s support for the country’s recovery efforts.
The assistance provided by the Asian country to Colombia includes medicines and medical equipment, temporary shelter materials, hygiene items, and other essential supplies to address the needs of those affected.

This has not been India’s only expression of solidarity with Colombia. On August 15, during the celebration of India’s Independence Day in Bogotá, the Embassy of India paid tribute to the victims of the earthquake, expressed its condolences for the lives lost, and observed a minute of silence in their memory.
India’s expressions of solidarity with Colombia come at a time of renewed diplomatic relations between the two countries. On August 21, the Latin American country welcomed India’s new Ambassador, Vinod J. Bahade, who met with Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar as part of his arrival in Colombia. During the meeting, the two countries’ close and friendly relations were highlighted. Various opportunities to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, healthcare, the digital economy, information technology, and tourism, among others, were also identified.

According to Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, India and Colombia established diplomatic relations in 1959, and since then, their ties have expanded into political, commercial, and cultural areas. The two countries also have agreements aimed at facilitating investment and avoiding double taxation, which have been in force since 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Undoubtedly, their bilateral relationship and cooperation are highly relevant in providing assistance and support to millions of Indian and Colombian citizens, while also opening new opportunities for the two countries to continue working together in addressing the challenges that may arise.
